How to Delegate When You Are carrying the whole Company on Your Shoulders - Real World Stories from February 2021 PowerLink Advisory Board Meetings

I’ve always been fascinated with television shows about business…Shark Tank and Bar Rescue and  Undercover Boss and Restaurant Impossible. What was the impact of good and bad decisions on customers and employees? In 30 or 60 minutes we get to watch a business lesson in action.  One of my favorite episodes was about a chef who was opening a restaurant in New York City. He had about 25 employees and everyone was new. His opening day was being televised and we got to watch one of the most disastrous opening days of all times. A packed restaurant, food served cold, patrons leaving who were never served at all, frustration at every turn. And the chef/part owner not sure why it had happened.

Then last night I watched the Super Bowl. One of my favorite NFL quarterbacks of all time, Tom Brady, was with a new team and calling plays from the field in his quiet and methodical way. We watched a highly experienced leader delegating to his team. Delegation is part art, part science. It takes process, practice and a genuine understanding of human nature. It takes an ability to lead and inspire as well as a demand for high performance. Yet every owner of a business, regardless of their training has to learn to run their business smoothly and effectively through delegation. I believe it is the art and science of delegation that is pivotal to building a great business and becoming an outstanding leader.

So in most of our meetings this month, we will be talking about hard and harder delegation issues….what tasks failed because of delegation…how do we delegate more effectively…are we delegating to the right people? Are we clear? Are we clear about our own communications style? Are we clear about outcomes we need?

This month, we will work with more than 175 small business owners who attend one of our 14 Community Advisory Board sessions. The topic is either “Delegating Effectively” or “Generating More On-Line Revenue.”

I’ll post more Lessons Learned at the end of February. Here is our schedule of Community Advisory Boards for February 2021. Please text if you want to bring another business owner (412.721.3186). Send all their contact information. See you in February on Zoom! -Anita
